Club Championship 2018 results
The 27th Club Championship was held this weekend (29th/1st July) in temperatures that reached over 30 degrees.
Played over the Saturday and Sunday the field of over 50 players which included Men, Ladies and the Juniors battled it out for the biggest prize of the year at Wellow.
The course was bouncy and fast and with only 2mm of rain falling in the month of June, Head greenkeeper Simon Justice and his team battled with browning greens and withering aprons and fought to produce a great test of golf for all playing.
The members were treated to greens faster and smoother than anyone had seen before at the club which is testament to the green staff and their commitment to the members and the course.
Billy Ray raised the Claret Jug after claiming a 1 shot victory over runner-up Jamie Hughes to claim back – to -back wins in the Club Championship.
The first round saw 13year old Rick Zhou shooting 76, and previous winner Dan Turton shooting 75 on Saturday to join Billy in the final pairing on Sunday.
Billy had started the final day with a slender one shot lead over the rest of the field and managed to hold off Jamie and Wellow’s Greenkeeper Ben Bright who both shot an impressive 72 to put the pressure on Billy.
The ladies were out late on the Saturday and the temperatures were already over 25 degrees, but led by Captain Sue Wren, off they went to do battle in the soaring heat.
There were two trophies up for grabs over the the two days and both were very well contested.
Sunday was a different story, the ladies were out first with the first teetime at 7:30am and the temperature near perfect.
Having missed the hottest part of the day, the ladies then had time to relax and enjoy the break and waited for the men to finish up their rounds.
It was Hillary Dobbins who after her last Championship win in 2011 was victorious once again taking the championship by a whopping 19 shots.
Gill Lobb took second place and Maggi Wood was crowned Wellow’s Ladies Nett Champion with an impressive Nett 145 total.
The Embley cup winner for 2018 was Jan Marsh winning on count-back from Runner -up Marilyn Daish.
Due to a clash with the Hampshire Junior League, the Junior Club Championship was shortened to just the one round on the Saturday. This meant that the tactics were out the window and it was pure shootout for the lowest round.
The day also saw golfers from the academy group compete for a 9 hole championship. The winner of this was 9 year old Ryan Tucker , with Runner -Up – Harrison Young.
After a long and hott day, the juniors finished in front of the clubhouse with smiles still on their red faces.

The Nett Champion was Jack Harris who ended up losing 3 whole strokes off his handicap as a result.
