2017 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS
26TH ANNUAL CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
This past weekend saw the 26th annual Club Championship played at Wellow Golf Club, Romsey.
The hot weather during the week helped to firm up the course and quickened the green’s speed just in time for the clubs’ most sought after Prize.
The 36 hole competition, played over the Saturday and Sunday was contested on a calm and pleasant Saturday morning, with the wind picking up on the Sunday, this only added another aspect to an already tight and challenging course.
The standard of play was high, despite the added pressure of yearlong bragging rights within the club. The juniors especially showed their spirit for the competition. Junior captain Lewis Sutton and last year’s Captain Zak Leigh both
played well and will have their handicaps reduced as a result, with Zak shooting a very impressive 77, seven under his handicap on Saturday.
The eventual winner was Billy Ray. Billy, who holds a handicap of 1, finished on top with a total gross score of 143, four strokes ahead of future Wellow Star, junior, Rick Zhou (4 handicap). The two were paired together on both days and with multiple birdie exchanges and mixed fortunes for each player around the greens, resulted in an exciting and well contested finish to the championship.
Wellow’s growing Ladies section were also out in force competing for their Club Championship and the Embley Cup. Sue Lanham won the main event with a gross score of 172, which now means she has won the past 4 years in a row. Laurie Wallace picked up the Embley cup with an impressive Nett 69 on Sunday.
Special thanks to Club President Ken Parker who acted as 1st Tee starter on both days, Club Captains Gillian Whalvin and Kevin Porter and their committees for helping to put on another great Championship weekend of golf at Wellow.
HOLE- IN -ONE
Lastly, the day will not be forgotten by Mr. John Dowling as he achieved his first Hole-in-One on Ryedown #9.
